Spiders Are A Popular Pet
Spiders are becoming an increasingly popular pet and with good reason, they are fascinating to watch and while handling is generally speaking to be avoided they can provide plenty of enjoyment while being relatively easy to care for. It should be remembered that some spiders are also protected and trafficking of such species is highly controlled and may be illegal in some cases. Be sure if you are purchasing a spider that you are doing so from a reputable dealer but it is always wise to do your own research regardless.
Caring For Your Spider
Spiders need little room to live in even the larger species should be okay in a cheap simple terrarium and smaller species may be comfortable in a jar. More exotic spiders may require specialised environmental conditions and habitats. Make sure there is water available but do not allow their environment to become damp. Keep their food supply maintained, most food sources should be fairly easy to come by either through specialist sources or, if you are adventurous, collecting it yourself.
Spider Bites
Most spiders are venomous and the strength of their venom varies from species to species and even from male to female in some cases. This should be taken into consideration before getting a spider as it may be difficult to find personal insurance that will cover you or a third party in the even of a pet spider bite not to mention the physical risks.
Information Regarding Tarantulas
Tarantulas, among the most popular types of pet spiders are mildly venomous (although some species have stronger venoms) with their bite being compared to that of a bee or wasp sting. That said, it is possible to be allergic to their (or other spiders) venom as with bees or wasps and this can result in a far worse anaphylactic reaction and medical attention should be sought immediately as this reaction can be fatal.
Avoid Being Bitten by a Spider
To avoid being bitten you’ll probably want to learn more about spider behavior and how to treat your spider accordingly. As with any animal, their natures are pre-programmed into them and they need to be treated with the respect they deserve. As a general rule, spiders will mostly run away and will only bite when stressed.
