Looking After a Rat
Keeping a rat requires responsibility and commitment as with any other pet you can buy. A rat will need daily care and attention for the period of it's life, which is quite short, usually 2-2.5 years. Rats also require veterinary treatment if they become ill.
Why Do Rats Have Bad Names ?
The rat is often given a bad name by people who perpetuate the myth that rats are unclean and spread disease, but in actual fact they are very clean and always ensure they wash thoroughly so you will not have to worry about bathing them or grooming.
Behaviour of Rats
Rats are very social and intelligent creatures who are quite happy being handled and left to roam, they are also highly inquisitive and are liable to chew items on their explorations so if you are planning on leaving them to wander you should make sure the area is 'rat-proof'.
Purchasing a Rat
When purchasing a rat it is preferable to go through a reputable dealer as they will have a better knowledge of the rats history having spent time selectively breeding their rats giving them a good idea of their temprement. A pet shop is unlikely to have this kind of information.

Shredded cardboard is recommended but you will probably want to try a few to find the one that suits your requirements. Fine sawdust or and bedding material that has a fine dust should be avoided as this can cause health problems for your rat.
Equipment - The Rat Cage
Your rats cage will probably be the biggest initial expense when buying you rat(s), you should try to buy one of the larger cages with a recommended minimum floor space 2 foot by 1 foot for 1 or 2 rats. Cages advertised as rat cages are often unsuitable but there is nothing to stop you from getting a cage advertised for rabbits, ferrets or other larger rodents.
Water Bottle for Your Rat
Your rat will need a supply of fresh water for which you can use a plastic bowl but this will get chewed and filled with bedding, a better solution is to use a water bottle.
