Lizards can Make Excellent Pets
Lizards can make excellent pets, but they require a lot of attention and a lot of money to get all of the equipment needed to keep them healthy and happy. You should carefully plan where you are going to keep them and whether you can support them financially.
Looking After Lizards
One of the biggest problems encountered with looking after lizards is that people simply do not understand the burden they can be. They make excellent pets if they are given the correct environment and you know what you are doing with them. It is best not to ask a pet shop for all of the relevant information required because they are less likely to know everything there is to know in their attempts to get a sale. You are best off searching the internet and reading books to find out how to look after a lizard properly.
Different Breeds Of Lizard
Leopard Geckos
Leopard Geckos can live for 20 years or more and are likely to reach approximately 8-10 inches in length. For accommodation purposes you should be looking at a tank about 15-20 gallons in capacity. This will be able to house about 2-3 geckos, but it is recommended that only one male is used per tank. If you wish to have more than one gecko then you should be prepared for offspring as putting a male and female together will mean they will mate.
Jacksons' Chameleon
Jacksons' Chameleon can range in length from about 9 to 13 inches, but often the males are the larger of the species compared to females. Chameleons should never be kept in glass containers because they require a lot of ventilation that can only be had from mesh containers. Vertical space is more important that surface area of the ground because chameleons like to climb high up so giving them plenty of twigs and rocks to climb is also a good idea. In the summer outdoor enclosure can be used to allow your chameleon to be let outside. You must ensure that they do not overheat, so it's best to keep them in shady areas away from direct sunlight.
Bearded Dragons
For a single bearded dragon a minimum of 40 gallons of area should be used, bigger is more preferential and it should have a secure top too. Adults can reach up to 20 inches so they require a lot more room than the smaller two mentioned above.
Bearded Dragons like to perch off the ground, so providing some form of ledge, or rock would make them happy as well as a branch of some sort to climb. There should also be somewhere for the 'dragon' to shelter and hide away.
